Not fewer than five people were killed on Sunday, January 29 when some gunmen stormed a Quebec city mosque during evening prayers and opened fire on Muslim faithful.
Reuters reports that the mosque’s president told reporters on Sunday that the attack shook residents of the Canadian city.
It also quoted a witness as saying the gunmen, who were three in number, opened gunfire on about 40 people inside the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Centre.
The attack has thrown the North American country into deep shock with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeting:
"Tonight, Canadians grieve for those killed in a cowardly attack on a mosque in Quebec City. My thoughts are with victims & their families.”
"Why is this happening here? This is barbaric,” said the mosque's president, Mohamed Yangui.
Meanwhile, Reuters quotes Quebec police on the scene as saying that two people had been arrested.
The authorities are trying to determine if it was an act of terrorism although no immediate details were given on the suspects.
"There are many victims ... there are deaths," a Quebec police spokesman told reporters.
The attack is the second on the Muslim community in North America since Saturday, January 28, just hours after US president Donald Trump signed an executive order banning Muslim travellers from some countries from entering the US
Recall that a Texas mosque was burned down in the early hours of Saturday under mysterious circumstances. The US authorities are also trying to determine if it was an attack or just an accident even though surveillance footage showed that the alarm had been deactivated and the doors unlocked.
