PREMIER LEAGUE – TAKEAWAYS FROM THE WEEKEND’S MATCHES

Liverpool totally dominated Arsenal
There is almost certain conclusion that Arsenal won’t be earning their perennial trophy of Champions League qualification this season. How do I mean? Clearly, from the way they played at Anfield and the ease with which an average Liverpool side marshaled them without breaking a sweat showed the pointer to my opening statement. It will take a super change of form and unbridled consistency for the Gunners to get the fourth qualification position.
Also, the League Table tells a very interesting tale. There are now six teams jostling for CL qualification aside Chelsea who are top of the pile. Manchester City, Tottenham, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and wait for this; Everton are all in with a chance. It means only the consistent will be among the top four ant the moment, Arsenal are the least consistent of the chasing horde.
AFC Bournemouth shut out Manchester United right on their hallowed grounds. Despite playing against 10 men, the Red Devils couldn’t maximize opportunities and when offered a lifeline; Artur Boruc did the Superman thing and saved the day against Zlatan. Curiously, Manchester United are still stuck in sixth notwithstanding being unbeaten in 16 league matches!
Leicester City owners are now justified of their decision to sack Claudio Ranieri. The Foxes playing their second match since the exit of the Italian showed a bit of the gut and character that won them the League. Going down a goal didn’t fluster them as it was in the recent past. They came back and in a big way to win by three goals to one against a spirited Hull City. To boot; Africa’s best player, Riyad Mahrez who hadn’t managed a goal in 27 games got one and the King Power Stadium is buzzing once again. The Foxes are now five points clear of the relegation zone and can play their remaining eleven games under less pressure.

Sam Alladyce may pull off another miracle in saving Crystal Palace. They got their second win in a bounce under the former England Manager. The Eagles are now flapping their wings and with determination may fly and soar away from danger.
Finally, Manolo Gabbiadini is proving to be one of the best January signing by any club. He is now the first player to score in three consecutive Premier League matches for the Saints. Their game against Watford was one of the most entertaining of the weekend. A seven goal thriller; one was left panting for most of the match!
