Recession: ITF plans to train 9,000 youths

In line with the Federal Government’s poverty alleviation and job creation programmes, the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) plans to train no fewer than 9000 youths in various skills nationwide under its National Industrial Skills Development Programme (NISDP).
The Director General of the fund, Joseph Ari, who disclosed this during 2017 ITF-Stakeholders’ Forum held ay Al-Qalam University, Katsina, noted that 500 youths drawn from 18 states in the federation would participate in the programme.
The ITF chief executive, represented by North West Zonal Director of the agency, Peter Agbo, said the youths will be trained in five trade areas expected to commence in August, 2017.
“I want to assure our contributing employers and various stakeholders that ITF is committed to quality service delivery despite the global economic recession which is affecting our national economy. To achieve the objectives of the federal government in job creation, the ITF has fashioned out six quick win strategies under its reviewed vision,” said Ari.
On the theme of the interactive session: “The ITF reviewed Vision for strategic development: A solution to youth empowerment and job creation in Nigeria,” he said the forum will enable the agency to make amend and re-strategize for better operations.
Earlier, the ITF Katsina Area Manager, Saleh Garba, disclosed that the Area Office had trained over 12,767 students of tertiary institutions in Katsina State through the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) from 2014 to date.
According to him, the Area Office also trained from 2013 to 2016 about 2500 unemployed Katsina youths under the National Industrial Skills Development Programme and plans were underway for the training of 500 additional youths this year.
“From 2015 to date, we have appraised, harmonized and installed 14 in-company apprenticeships in seven organizations in the state. The exercise covered 207 trainees,” Garba added.
