Command arraigns customs agent for N12.3m fraud



A 43-year-old man, Idowu llesanmi, has been arraigned before a Lagos State Magistrate’s Court in Ikeja for alleged N12.3m fraud.
The police said llesanmi pretended to be a customs agent and collected the sum from a customer to facilitate the release of three containers loaded with stadium seats.
When he could not clear the containers from customs, he reportedly presented First Bank cheques to the complainant to refund the money, but the cheques were not honoured due to insufficient funds in the account.
The police prosecutor, Inspector N. Peter, said llesanmi committed the offence between May and July 31, 2017, adding that it was contrary to and punishable under sections 289, 321, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
When the charge was read to him, Ilesanmi, who was arraigned on four counts bordering on conspiracy and stealing, pleaded not guilty.
The charge read in part “That you, Idowu Ilesanmi, and others now at large between May and July 31, 2017, at Onipanu, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony, to wit; stealing.
“That you and others now at large, on the same date, time and place, in the aforementioned magisterial district, with intent to defraud, did obtain the sum of N12,367,000 from one Bola Dahunsi under the pretext that you are a licensed customs agent and that you will clear three containers loaded with stadium seats, which you never did, a representative you knew to be false, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”
The presiding magistrate, Y.O Aje-Afunwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N1.2m with two responsible sureties in like sum.
The magistrate stated that the residential addresses of the sureties must be verified and they must tender evidence of tax payments.
She adjourned the case till December 4, 2017.
