Allowance Scam: EFCC won’t spare corrupt VCs – Magu

The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, said on Tuesday that the commission would not spare any vice-chancellor found culpable in the alleged N5.77m furniture allowance scam.
Magu said this while speaking with newsmen during a visit to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board headquarters in Abuja.
The acting chairman also noted that it was “too early to talk about the commission’s probe of past JAMB registrars concerning remittances to the Federal Government.”
The EFCC had been reported in August 2017 to have begun a probe of some vice-chancellors and bursars for taking N480,000 and N90,000 Duty Tour Allowance which culminated into N5.77m.
It had been reported that the EFCC chairman met with the concerned vice-chancellors and bursars as part of the investigations.
Magu said on Tuesday that none of the culpable vice-chancellors would be spared.
“It is too early for me to comment on this issue (whether we are beaming our searchlight on past JAMB registrars). But we are working on it. On the vice-chancellors, we will not spare anybody.”
The JAMB Registrar, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, said the board would cooperate with the EFCC in fighting corruption in the form of examination malpractices.
He said, “We have in our custody some people who broke into our Virtual Private Network. They created very-small-aperture terminal in Osogbo and Ilesha, Osun State, and broadcast across the country. These people are young boys and girls. They are only concerned about the money they get and not about the effects of their corrupt practices.”
The registrar noted that a total of 1,451,691 candidates had registered for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, while 39,663 were Direct Entry candidates.
