THE Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has lamented the high rate of importation of food in Nigeria ,describing it as a shame that the giant of Africa imports what it eats.
Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun
Amosun who also emphasized diversification of economy ,said there was no way the country would achieve diversification without industrialization.
Amosun who advised farmers in the country to make better use of the opportunities provided to them by the government , announced plans to commence aggressive land clearing within the state.
The governor stated this at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan,while inaugurating ten newly purchased bulldozers adding that the machines would be used for land clearing and other agricultural projects.
He said the 10 bulldozers were the first batch to be purchased by the state noting that in subsequent weeks and months, more machines would be bought by the states in batches.
“”We will be using them for ourselves and our farmers are welcome to hire at a reduced subsidized rate. We need to have food sufficiency. It is a big shame that we import what we eat, we need to be able to feed ourselves. We are going back to the basis and if diversification is going to be achieved, it must be through industrialization.
“I have to thank the Federal Government and I am extending this same appreciation to the CBN because without their support we would not have been in the position to do this. This is part of the Tax Fund and what we are doing with it.
“We are going to commence aggressive land clearing. We have been doing this even by hiring machines but we discovered that the money we are spending is so huge that it is better to but. This is the first batch and within the next one or two weeks and on a monthly bases we will be commissioning batches of 10” he said.
Amosun, however, emphasized that the machines would be hired to farmers at a subsidized price with the purpose of boosting farming and agricultural production within the state.
