BUHARI’s ELONGATED REST

Sad to read that the President needs more time to rest and will be staying away for what now seems an indeterminate period. May Allah grant him full recovery in the quickest possible time.
I have no sympathy for those who have turned the President’s ill-health into political football, kicking up all sorts of abhorrent analysis and commentary on the situation. Mercifully, we DO NOT have a Yar Adua situation on our hands, and no amount of opposition to the man himself changes the fact that all his actions since taken ill are within the confines of our constitution.
My only real disappointment with the situation is that we will continue to be saddled with so many poorly performing ministers. Short of using the force of his personality, intellect, and endeavor to bring about an improvement across board, there’s precious little else the Vice President (Acting President, if you will) can do. He cannot unilaterally reshuffle the cabinet, for his “new” powers do not extend to the authority to hire and fire.
So we will remain stuck with a Minister of Finance who is out of her depth, a Minister of Sports who is no more than a comic relief, an under-empowered Minister of State for Petroleum, an over-burdened Minister of Power, Works and Housing, an absentee Minister for the Environment, an underwhelming Minister of Justice, a CBN Governor superintending over a complete collapse of monetary policy. Amongst many others.
May this cup pass over this nation soon.
