The Federal Government of Nigeria has pledged to upscale its pilot projects of waste-to-wealth in the six geopolitical zones of the country.
Minister of Science of Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, said this when the Abia State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Chief Fabian Nwankwo, visited him in his office in Abuja.
He said the waste-to-wealth programme was conceived, using appropriate indigenous technology to convert waste to wealth, and ensuring sustainable management of waste in the country.
The programme, he explained, would also accelerate an inclusive socio-economic development through entrepreneurship to create employment, wealth and healthy environment for the citizens.
He, therefore, called for the establishment of Ministry of Science and Technology in all the states as it is critical to the industrialization and development of the country.
Dr Onu stressed the need for states to recognize the primary role of science and technology to ensure rapid industrialization, saying the ministry was working with the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure that science subjects are taught in local languages at primary level as children would learn faster if they are taught in their mother’s tongues.
Earlier, the visiting commissioner appealed to the ministry to expedite work on a waste-to-wealth project in Abia, expressing the state’s willingness to partner with the ministry on leather production, technology incubation and capacity building.
