Health ministry launches STG, EML, harps on compliance



The federal government has assured that it will set mechanism in motion to ensure timely distribution of Standard Treatment Guidelines (STG) and National Essential Medicines List (EML), in line with international best practices, to all relevant stakeholders in the health sector.
The minister of Health Prof. Isaac Adewole who stated this at the launching of the second edition of the National Standard Treatment Guidelines (STG) and the sixth edition of the National Essential Medicines List (EML), described the documents as the core documents in the health sector of every country.
Prof. Adewole who explained that the goal of the documents “is in line with National Drug Policy” said the documents will be used for: “Procurement of medicines and their use in the public sector, prescribing medicines in the public health sector, medicines information to healthcare providers, re-imbursement of medicines in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and reference standard for health professionals.”
He emphasised that Federal Ministry of Health will also ensure the establishment of proper M&E structure with relevant indicators to assess the gains of this efforts.
“At this juncture, I hereby challenge PSN, NMA, CMDs of Tertiary Health Institutions, Directors Pharmaceutical Services (DPSs) and all other relevant stakeholders as a matter of call to duty to be committed towards ensuring the successful implementation of these documents,” he said.
He called on all health care providers across the states of the federation to take queue from the federal government.
