Lagos records two deaths from meningitis, national death toll hits 438

Lagos State has recorded two deaths from the Cerebrospinal Meningitis currently ravaging the country.
The national death toll has been put at 438, according to a statistics released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Friday.
The statistics showed that as at April 5, 2017, three cases of the infectious disease were recorded in Lagos, out of which two people died.
The report detailed a total of 3,959 cases, with 438 deaths, while there have been 181 laboratory confirmed cases so far.
The apparent increase in number of cases is as a result of intensified case-finding going on in the affected states, the NCDC said.
In a report entitled, Cerebrospinal meningitis outbreak in Nigeria: Situation report dated April 6th, 2017 and released by the NCDC, the epic summary was given as follows:
• Total of 3,959 suspected cases with 438 deaths (CFR=11.1%) reported from 106 LGAs
• Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi and Sokoto states in the North-West zone, and Niger State in the North-Central zone account for about 95% of the cases reported
• A total of 181 positive cases confirmed by Pastorex and Culture; Neisseria meningitides serotype C being the most common serotype accounting for 83% of laboratory confirmed cases
• The most affected age group is 5-14 years and accounts for 52% of cases
