A woman in Indonesia has been publicly lashed 26 times for having a relationship outside marriage
- The man she was involved with was also lashed
- The province of Banda Aceh is the only one in Indonesia that enforces Shariah law
An unnamed woman in the Indonesian province of Banda Aceh has been publicly lashed with a cane in accordance with Shariah law for having a relationship with a man outside marriage.
The woman was made to kneel on a stage specifically erected for the punishment. She appears to hold her head in apparent pain and anguish at the brutal punishment.
The man she was allegedly involved with also faced the same punishment, and although he appeared more stoic, the grimace on his face was clear.
Banda Aceh is the only Indonesian province that observes strict Shariah law.
A number of Islamic laws have also been passed in Banda Aceh in recent years, including a ban on women in entertainment places at night unless they are accompanied by a male relative.
